Alaska Trip July 2023

This is just mostly a pictorial summary of our seven day cruise from Vancouver to Whittier in Alaska followed by a seven day guided trip through Alaska and the Yukon.

Quick flight over the spectacular Rockies from Calgary to Vancouver.

Stayed with our friends Sue and Darrell before heading off on our adventure. They took us down to see their new sail boat moored in one of the prettiest marina’s we have ever been to.

Leaving Vancouver Harbour.

Doing it tough – very calm waters.

Ketchikan – our first port of call.

Very much enjoyed the lumbar jack show and the sun!!

Meanderings around the town of Ketchikan.

Basic mode of transport in Alaska. One in nine people fly a plane to get around – 1 in 20 have a pilots license………

Skagway. The day we were there, there were four cruise ships in, adding 7,000 people to the local population of about a 1,000.

Spent our day in Skagway riding a bike from Canada back into the USA and it was all downhill.

Meanwhile, back on the cruise at Glacier Bay.

College Inlet. Last day of the cruise.

One of the glaciers in College Inlet.

Onto the train from Whittier to Anchorage. A 2.5 hour train ride up along the estuary.

Doing it in comfort.

Next day it was back on the train to Seward where we were going on a small boats to see glaciers and marine wildlife up close.

We were so lucky as we got to see whales bubble feeding – spectacular sight and very privileged.

From Anchorage, we were back on the train for 8 hours to Denali National park. Fluked the weather yet again!!

Paddle Steamers were used extensively in Alaska and the Yukon.

Mr McMoose

Drying the Salmon prior to smoking it.

Onto Dawson City – back in Canada.

Huge gold mining history where Fras felt right at home.

Parks Canada had done a great job of restoration of one of the saloons.

Like being back at Moulin Rouge.

Back to Vancouver and then home. We were fortunate to be upgraded to a room with a view and a plane menu where we were able to sit by the window and do some serious plane spotting.
