Houston, Texas to Junction, Texas – 30th November

Oh god, we were back in the car by 11.00am heading off in a westerly direction towards Arizona.

This is the last push towards our final destination. It has been hard to break this final stretch of 1,700k up into two days as it is just too far to do 800k in a day plus the locations for lodgings for the evenings were not well spaced. Hence, we have decided to split it into three days.

After bidding Tom and Janice, a fond farewell and maybe meeting in Calgary next year, we headed out onto the I10. The guys did mention to us to fill up at Buc-ee’s as they said it was an education in unto itself. It is a chain of gas (petrol) stations that has morphed into this destination where you can buy just about anything. The one we pulled happened to be their largest location where they had a mere 120 bowsers with a store of only 75,000 square foot and the cleanest bathrooms!! Actually, the bathrooms are what they are known for and is what has made them very popular. How many of us can put up our hands and say some of the most disgusting bathrooms have been at are at fuel stops – ours are reaching up to the ceiling.

We did find that it was quite the gong show at the bowsers as there were no directions as to how to  enter or exit and people were just making up their own rules. Guess it is Texas after all.!!  Also, we felt that the area between the bowsers and parking were just too tight. We reckon there must be multiple fender benders there every day.

We made it to our final destination of the town of Junction for the night which is only a tiny town of 2,500 people with a lot of hotels catering to the highway traffic. Tomorrow is our last big day and we are going to see just how far we can manage to get. By the time we finally make it to Arizona, we will have taken 17 days to get there – ugh!!
