Rochester, Minnesota to Des Moines, Iowa – 24th November

It was so nice to have the three-day break from the car so wasn’t really looking forward to climbing back in. Our next big push is from Rochester to Houston which will be 1,150 miles and we will be covering the distance in four days. A good positive is that the weather should be warming up the further we head south. The not so good news is that the sun is very low in the sky, and we will be driving directly into it.

It is American Thanksgiving this Thursday and it is the biggest four-day travel weekend of the year. They envisage 80 million will be moving around via train, planes and automobiles. As is the norm, this is when the weather turns absolutely crappy with winter storms moving through particularly in the northern states. And, YEAP, there are two storm fronts moving through of which one is most likely responsible for the 12+ inches of snow that poor old Calgary just got. Luckily for us, our trajectory is due south.

After our very fond farewells to Ilka, Dennis, Ginger and Finnegan we headed out the driveway and south towards Des Moines, Iowa. It was just over a four-hour drive through CORN FIELDS and lots of the fu#@kers – we never want to see another one but that isn’t going to happen as we have at least four days of them. We had been warned by many!!!

A tick for another state visited.

We spent the afternoon and evening with good friends Colleen and Paul. Fraser use to work with Paul when he and Colleen lived in Denver. Paul and Colleen also knew Ilka and Dennis so it has been a lovely trip down memory lane.

This is Otis – not sure how much he weighs. He is Paul and Colleens five-year-old bundle of gentle giant. He just followed Toque around the house and outside in the yard the whole time we were there. Toque is smaller than Otis’s head. Wish we had got a photo of them side by side for comparison as it was so cute. Toque seemed keen to sit on Otis’s paws when he laid down and he didn’t bat an eye. Once again, she sucked everyone in.

Paul took Fraser for a ride in his fully autonomous Tesla. He is super proud of it and even does some Uber driving. We think he likes to scare passengers by taking his hands of the steering wheel. Di stayed behind with Colleen for a good old girl’s catchup. Fras stated it was pretty cool though would take some getting use to.
