Vancouver Bush Walk – 19th November

Very leisurely start with a sumptuous breakfast followed by a walk in the local forest which was just up the road from Sue and Darrells place.

This is ultimate black bear country. In fact, the townhouse complex where Sue and Darrell live had their secured rubbish bin area broken into twice by bears who were on the scrounge. It is a very serious issue for the bears and inevitably it they come off second best.

We were out walking for and hour and a half and though a little muddy underfoot, the rain did hold off for us. Toque walked the whole way which very much surprised us. To say she looked a lot like the car did the day before, was a good comparison.

We went to Wendy’s for a lovely dinner and more chatting time.

USA Bound – 20th November

We set off at 9.30am under slightly overcast skies to head down to the USA border crossing.

Got the usual grumpy customs official but he was very perplexed as to why we would drive from Calgary to Vancouver and then head south and then back east again to go to Arizona. We think our accents also sent his brain cells into a spin.

We made our way along the coast and then headed to the islands just below the San Juan Islands. It was lushly green and very forested with some fantastic sea glimpses between the rather tall forest.

We island hopped a couple of islands using pretty decent bridges and narrow channels which created serious currents.

At Coupeville we caught the ferry across to Port Townsend. The ferry ride took us half an hour and was almost full. We were lucky to make it as otherwise we would have had to wait for an hour and a half for the next one. Right next to where the ferry left were about six sea lions just mucking around in the water having a good time. We are also in Orca territory!!!

From here, it was then onto Port Angeles which is the gateway to the Olympic National Park. This distance of 280k has taken us nearly all day and we managed to get in and settled just after dark. This driving is tiring business. Toque is travelling well and slept most of today due to the rather long walk she went on yesterday.
